The mission of the California Mathematics Project (CMP) is to develop and enhance K-12 teachers' content knowledge and instructional strategies aligned with the California State Board of Education adopted California Mathematics Content Standards and Framework.
At the center of every CMP program are the following goals to:
- Provide formal partnerships with schools and/or districts to deliver services to teachers of mathematics in poor and minority schools.
- Design programs that meet the unique mathematics needs of schools, teachers, teacher aides, administrators, students, and parents.
- Provide English Language Development (ELD) assistance and materials that support mathematics and literacy.
- Identify, develop, and sustain mathematics teacher leaders in education communities.
- Expand statewide opportunities for mathematics professional development.
- Promote teacher retention and stability in high priority schools.
- Support schools and districts as they examine student data, develop assessment tools for mathematical knowledge, content, instructional strategies, and learning.
- Raise the awareness of university mathematics faculty about issues and programs related to K-12 mathematics education.
The CMP supports 19 regional sites located on University of California (UC), California State University (CSU), and independent college and university campuses to provide programs that strengthen teaching and learning in mathematics. The CMP is one of the nine subject disciplines that comprise the California Subject Matter Project (CSMP). The CSMP is supported by the state of California and is administered by the University of California Office of the President. All CSMP disciplines share common goals and program elements to further their mandate in providing professional and leadership development for K-12 teachers throughout the state.
